Et relire les r\u00e9actions des journaux am\u00e9ricains de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque retranscrites, pour l&rsquo;occasion, par HNN (History News Network).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hnn.us\/articles\/grand-emancipation-jubilee\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lyonelkaufmann.ch\/histoire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Emancipation_proclamation.jpg\" alt='' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among historians there is significant debate over the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 and its actual and immediate impact on slavery in the United States. However these contemporary newspaper articles and speeches make clear that for the majority of abolitionists and free and freed black people, it had tremendous symbolic importance and was cause for a \u201cgrand emancipation jubilee.<em>\u201d Frederick Douglass later summarized these feeling in his autobiography. \u201cThe first of January, 1863, was a memorable day in the progress of American liberty and civilization. It was the turning point in the conflict between freedom and slavery.
