Blood and Bones

10 janvier 2020 by Lyonel Kaufmann Laisser un commentaire

The End of the Trump Presidency Now Looms

22 avril 2018 by Lyonel Kaufmann Laisser un commentaire

The scandals surrounding President Donald Trump are metastasizing rapidly, much more than anyone would have thought just a few months ago.

The investigation by Robert Mueller, now 11 months in duration, has been accumulating evidence of possible Russian collusion, obstruction of justice, abuse of power, violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, and the corruption surrounding many members of the Trump circle, including his own children and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

But then the Stormy Daniels scandal, and other related shameful episodes involving other women became part of the equation, and the business dealings of Donald Trump in New York State were added to the complicated situation. And now, the seizure of materials and records of Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen raises the ante on the troubles and turmoil surrounding Donald Trump. At the same time, Trump is without stable advice from his cabinet or others, due to the chaotic nature of a constantly changing set of advisers, and his tendency to “shoot from the hip” not only in tweets, but in constantly evolving views on domestic and foreign policy challenges.

With the midterm congressional elections now less than seven months away, and with the Republicans running scared about potential massive losses, and with more criticism emerging from not only respectable conservatives, but also from some of his own loyalists, Donald Trump’s time in the Presidency seems rapidly coming toward a sudden end.

While Republican members of Congress look unlikely to abandon him before the midterm elections, it could still happen if Donald Trump fires Robert Muller, Rod Rosenstein, Jeff Sessions, and others, a constant threat. New indictments by Mueller, and the possibility of such action by the New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman could be in the offing very soon. And if Trump family members were to be indicted, it could put Trump under such pressure that possible resignation, through some form of arranged “deal,” is not beyond imagination. If the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives in November, impeachment action seems highly likely in 2019, although conviction in the US Senate would be nearly impossible.

However, there is a scheduled meeting of right-wing Evangelical leaders with President Trump on June 19, to consider strategy for the midterm elections, as this group is alarmed at the thought that the Trump scandals could cost them the advancement of their religious agenda. It could be, two months from now, that gloom and doom will set in, and cause these pastors and ministers and their allies to consider Trump’s resignation as preferable, as it would bring a “true believer,” Vice President Mike Pence, to the Presidency.

One would think behind the scenes that many congressional Republicans and conservatives would clearly prefer Pence, who is religiously devout, and does not have the drama and controversy that Donald Trump constantly presents. With Pence, the right-wing would not lose, but instead gain a great deal of comfort. This makes it conceivable that we’ll see a repeat of history. When Richard Nixon proved toxic in July 1974 a delegation of congressional Republicans marched to the White House to let him know his base of support on Capitol Hill had collapsed.

No matter what the future scenario, America is in a constitutional crisis of greater proportions than Watergate, and with the attendant danger of a Great Recession or a third World War, caused by a mentally unstable and highly stressed President. So while it now seems likely that Trump will outlast the 492 days of President Zachary Taylor, to be reached on May 27, 2018, once thought by this scholar to be the end point of the Trump Presidency, it seems evident that Trump will leave office before the 4th shortest Presidency, that of Warren G. Harding from 1921-1923, a total of 881 days. This would be Thursday, June 20, 2019.

So with 15 months down in the Trump Presidency, the chance of his leaving in the next 14 months at the most is on the horizon.

Cully Jazz Festival: notes bleues et soleil pour une édition record

22 avril 2018 by Lyonel Kaufmann Laisser un commentaire

How to make the most out of Windows 10 S

14 juillet 2017 by Lyonel Kaufmann Laisser un commentaire

How to make the most out of Windows 10 S

http://ift.tt/2sUlfGK

Windows 10 S is Microsoft’s newest version of its Windows operating system. It’s designed for students, and it’s meant to take on Google’s Chromebook and Chrome OS ecosystem. What that means in practical terms is that 10 S is a more locked-down version of Windows, with users limited to only being able to install Windows Store applications. The flip side is that by requiring applications to only come from the Windows Store, Microsoft can do a whole lot more to ensure that Windows 10 S is a fast, secure operating system.

So whether you’ve got a fancy new Surface Laptop or a budget HP ProBook, here’s how to survive with those limitations and make the most out of your Windows 10 S experience.

Web browsing

In today’s cloud-based world, your web browser is almost a more important choice than your operating system. If you’re on Windows 10S, that means you’re stuck using Microsoft Edge. Google doesn’t make Chrome for Windows 10 S, and even if it did, Microsoft won’t let you set it as the default browser. Microsoft’s Edge browser isn’t my preference, but it’ll still get the job done for most of what you need to do. I work almost entirely web-based, and between writing and browsing, I didn’t really run into any issues. Flash is also available on 10S, although Edge will disable it by default, even on pages like the Microsoft Store.

The biggest annoyance with Edge, however, is importing user data. While Edge on regular Windows can import bookmarks and other data from installed browsers, Windows 10 S can’t grab data from other browsers. It’s messy, but the easiest way to get all your Chrome or Opera data to Windows 10 S is to export bookmarks to an HTML file, and manually import them. Alternatively, you can get a different Windows 10 computer, sync your Chrome settings, import them to Edge, and then sync those to your Windows 10 S machine.

Similarly, Edge didn’t have any of my usernames or passwords conveniently saved, but using a password management service like LastPass (which functions cross-platform, and is available through the Windows 10 Store) will help simplify that process.

Frustratingly, Windows 10 S is still Windows at its core, so websites will still ask if you’d like to install apps (Yes, Google, I would prefer to use Chrome but I can’t!), and installers will even tantalizingly download as they normally would. You just can’t install anything outside of the store. Microsoft is going to redirect users to the Windows Store when they try to download .exe files on Windows 10 S, but it’s unclear how far it’s implemented it, and there’s clearly more work to be done to make this clear to consumers.

Music

Next up, we’ve got music. Obviously, if you use Microsoft’s Groove Music service, you’re already good to go, but I suspect that applies to fewer people than Microsoft would like. More likely, you’re a Spotify user. While you might have been forced to use a mobile version of the Spotify app at one point, Microsoft now offers the regular desktop version of Spotify on the Windows Store, so you’ll be able to use it like you would any other computer.

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, right now you’re still out of luck. Apple doesn’t offer a web player, so you need iTunes. But Microsoft announced at Build 2017 that it’s reached a deal with Apple and will be offering iTunes on the Windows Store soon, though we still don’t have a firm date as to when that happens.

Of course, any web-based services, like Pandora, Google Play Music, YouTube Music, or Tidal will all work fine in Edge.

Word processing

If you’re buying a Windows 10 S machine, there’s a good chance you’re a student or working professional who’s going to need to do some word processing at some point. Since this is Windows, you’ll probably be using Microsoft Word to do it.

This is where things get slightly complicated. Microsoft offers two versions of Office for Windows 10 S right now: a “preview” version of the full desktop Office that’s now available through the Windows Store, and the mobile version of Office that Microsoft created for mobile devices like tablets and phones. (The mobile versions are hidden in search, but you can find them here.) Which one you use is a matter of preference, but if you can get away without some of the more advanced features of Word and PowerPoint, I personally find that the mobile version is a bit more streamlined for quickly getting things done.

If you’re not an Office 365 subscriber, you won’t really be able to use either version of Office, though. In that case, Google Docs, which you’ll be able to access through Edge, is probably your best bet.

Lastly, if you’re just looking for a quick text editor, Appy Text is the way to go. It’s free, fast, and even supports markdown, making it perfect for jotting down quick notes, or, say, writing how-to guides to import into your site’s publishing system.

Somewhat frustratingly, for storing documents in the cloud, you’re pretty much stuck with OneDrive or using web apps to access services like Dropbox or Google Drive — while you can install a Dropbox app from the Windows Store to view your files, you can’t sync them without the full desktop app, which you can’t install on Windows 10 S.

Email

Microsoft’s own built-in mail app is pretty good, even with Gmail. There’s a few options on the store, too, but your best bet might be to just use Gmail in Edge and enable desktop notifications, which will let you get regular Windows notifications.

Entertainment

Edge still works, and if for some reason you have a pathological aversion to that, Netflix, Hulu, and most of the other video services have dedicated Windows Store apps. Either way, you’ll be able to binge-watch just fine.

Gaming

There’s no way to get to your Steam library on Windows 10S, but you’ll have access to the Windows Store for games, which isn’t as dire of a situation now that Microsoft is pushing the Xbox Play Anywhere program for cross-purchases between Xbox One consoles and Windows PCs. This isn’t that big of a deal anyway, though, because if you’re running Windows 10S, the computer you’re using probably wasn’t built for gaming anyway.

Image and video

Can you do it in Paint? Paint’s installed! You’ve even got Paint 3D! No? Alright, you’ve got Photoshop Express in the Store, which might work in a pinch for some light picture editing, but if you’re trying to do serious creative work, Windows 10S is probably not the operating system for you.

Give up and install full Windows

Look, you tried to jump through Microsoft’s hoops. You really did! And you did great. But fortunately, Microsoft also offers an upgrade from Windows 10 S to the full version of Windows 10. Check out The Verge’s guide here for full instructions on how to do that — although if you’re not using a Surface Laptop, which currently offers the Windows 10 Pro upgrade for free, there’s a one-time $49 fee for the upgrade.

We’ll see you on the other side, over in the land of Google Chrome and Adobe products.
